Lead Software Architect & Technical Partner | Ajel.sa (2017 - 2019)

Executive Summary

Ajel.sa (صحيفة عاجل الإلكترونية) is one of the highest-traffic digital newspapers and breaking news networks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Contracted independently as Lead Software Architect, took ownership of an unstandardized, high-overhead Drupal installation on Acquia Cloud Enterprise, refactoring its architecture and operational processes to support millions of daily readers, extreme breaking news traffic surges, and complex monetization streams.

Restructured engineering and editorial governance, eliminated schema bloat, instituted multi-tier CI/CD release pipelines, and continuously optimized performance, search visibility (SEO/Google News/AMP), and segmented ad delivery.

Key Technical Challenges & Architecture

//1. Architectural Stabilization & Schema Governance

Inherited a brittle Drupal codebase where unvetted custom fields and modules caused performance degradation and lock contention during traffic surges.

  • ->Isolated and cleaned legacy customizations, stripped database bloat, and enforced strict schema governance.
  • ->Established multi-level role-based security permissions across editorial, authoring, and administrative workflows.
  • ->Implemented a structured three-tier release process (Development $\rightarrow$ Staging $\rightarrow$ Production) using version-controlled configuration and automated CI/CD pipelines to eliminate cutover risk and unexpected deployment failures.

//2. High-Concurrency Edge Caching & Multi-Tier Optimization

  • ->Varnish & Edge Caching: Configured granular block-level and page-level cache-invalidation rules, offloading over 85% of dynamic read queries from primary database clusters.
  • ->Redis Object Caching: Deployed Redis to eliminate repeat database queries and maintain sub-50ms query response times under heavy concurrent user sessions.
  • ->Cron Daemons & Preloading: Engineered automated cron daemons to rebuild search indexing asynchronously, pre-compress uploaded editorial imagery, and warm critical article caches before traffic spikes.

//3. Monetization, A/B Testing & Segmented Ad Delivery

  • ->Designed segmented A/B testing frameworks to evaluate layout iterations, ad positions, and traffic engagement without degrading Core Web Vitals.
  • ->Implemented asynchronous, segmented ad injection based on reader geography, content category, and device type, maximizing ad exposure and revenue yield while preserving fast Time-to-First-Byte (TTFB).

//4. Content Syndication & Discovery (AMP / Google News / RSS)

  • ->Built dedicated syndication pipelines compliant with Google News, RSS feeds, and Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) standards.
  • ->Implemented editorial tagging and taxonomy optimization tools for authors, boosting search indexing and driving continuous organic traffic growth across the GCC.
